Fireplaces are one of the simpler tile project and can usually be applied
directly to the sheetrock around the fireplace.  Here are the steps:

1.  Be sure sheetrock is properly primed before starting.
2.  Any steps or mantles should be prepped usual thinset and backerboard.
 (See
New Home Floors for full instructions)
3.  Secure a 2 x 4 below the top of the fireplace leaving 1/4'' of the top
showing.
4.  Use a 4' level to adjust until perfectly level.
5.  Start in the center and install top row of tiles using a 1/4'' square
notched trowel or larger.  Be sure to use thinset and not tile adhesive or
glue.
6.  Once top row is completely set, remove the 2 x 4 and tile sides.  This
can take up to 24 hours depending on what type of thinset is used.  There
is a certain kind that will set in 1-2 hours but be sure you know what you are
doing or it can be a big mess.
7.  Grout after 24 hours.
